Hi sweet friend,
Are you feeling burned out, anxious, or overwhelmed? You’re not alone. Today we’re talking about how Christian self-care can help renew your mind and spirit.
There was a time when I thought self-care was selfish.
I’d tell myself, “I don’t have time for that,” or “Other people need me more than I need rest.” And instead, I ran myself into the ground, thinking that being exhausted all the time was just part of being a single mom, working two jobs, trying to hold everything together.
But I was burning out. I felt constantly anxious. I was short-tempered, on edge, and so overwhelmed that even the smallest things would send me into a spiral. I didn’t even realize how worn down I was until I started feeling the effects physically - migraines, fatigue, upset stomach and tears that would show up out of nowhere.
So I aked God for help.
That’s when He reminded me that even Jesus stepped away from the crowds to rest. (Luke 5:16)
Self-care isn’t selfish. It’s stewardship. And as Christians, self-care starts by returning to God.
Here are 7 Christian self-care practices that are helping me when I feel overwhelmed:
1. Start your day in quiet with God
Even just 5 minutes in the morning to sit in silence, pray, read Scripture or listen to the Bible App can change the direction of your entire day. When I skip this, I feel it. But when I pause and start my day with God, even if the house is still noisy, my spirit feels steadier as I start my day
“In the morning, O LORD, You will hear my voice.” Psalm 5:3
2. Say no to the things that drain you
This was a hard one for me. I used to say yes to everything and everyone. But boundaries are holy. When I ask God in prayer, “Is this mine to carry?” I can discern what to release. Saying no to one thing is saying yes to peace.
3. Worship through the stress
Sometimes I don’t have the words to pray. So I turn on worship music, especially when I’m cleaning, driving, or feeling anxious. Praising God lifts my spirit in ways I can’t explain. It reminds me I’m not carrying life alone.
4. Get outside and move your body
I’ve found that something as simple as a walk outside helps me breathe better both physically and spiritually. Just getting fresh air helps clear my mind. And movement can be worship too when we do it in gratitude for the body God gave us.
5. Journal your thoughts and give them to God
When I feel mentally cluttered, it helps me to write. I pour out all my anxious thoughts, frustrations, and prayers. Then I surrender them to God. Writing reminds me that I don’t have to fix everything, instead I can trust God's plan.
6. Lean on friends and family
God didn’t design us to walk through life alone. When I isolate myself, my struggles feel louder. But when I reach out to a trusted friend, share what I’m going through, or ask for help, I’m reminded that I’m not alone. And that’s part of healing.
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
7. Rest without guilt
Rest isn’t a reward, it’s a requirement. I used to feel guilty for taking time to rest or enjoy something for myself. But now, I see it as an act of trust. Resting is saying, “God, I trust You to handle what I can’t.”
If you’re feeling tired, anxious, or burned out right now, sweet friend, you are not alone.
And you don’t have to fix it all by yourself.
Take time this week to care for your soul the way God designed you to. Let Him refill the empty parts and remind you that peace isn’t something you earn, it’s something He gives freely.
“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
With love and grace,
Kimberly
