Where Is God in My Pain? How to See Him in the Middle of Your Struggle ✝

Where Is God in My Pain? How to See Him in the Middle of Your Struggle ✝

If you've ever wondered, "God, where are You?" in the middle of pain, you're not alone. I’ve asked Him that question more times than I can count.

There was a time in my life when pain was my normal. I was trapped in an abusive marriage, torn down day after day, and so deep in shame that I truly believed I didn’t deserve better. I thought I had made my bed, and now I had to lie in it ... broken, silenced, and unseen.

But even there, God found me.

He didn’t come with flashing lights or instant escape. But He began to stir something in me. Little by little, I found the courage to believe I was worth more. That my kids deserved more. That He had more for me.

And by His grace, He made a way out.

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18

Leaving was just the beginning. What followed were years of struggle I didn’t expect. Trying to rebuild a life from nothing. Trying to give my kids a sense of stability when I felt anything but stable. And even as I prayed and tried to follow God's lead, my ex-husband continued trying to destroy everything I was building - emotionally, financially, legally.

There were moments I felt completely abandoned by God. "Lord, why would You bring me out just to leave me here?" I cried that prayer more than once.

But I learned that  just because the struggle continues doesn’t mean God has disappeared. He never promised the road would be easy, but He did promise to walk with us through it.

And over time, I began to see how even my pain was part of a bigger story. The struggle shaped me, strengthened me, and grew my faith in ways I never expected. The woman I am today - the mother, the friend, the encourager - she came out of that fire.

💛 Practical Ways to See God in the Struggle

1. Be honest with Him.
God can handle your questions, your anger, your heartbreak. Don’t bottle it up. Pour it out in prayer, even if it’s messy. That honesty creates space for real healing.

2. Keep a journal of small victories.
There were so many days when I couldn’t see any progress. But when I started writing down the little things - a kind word, a moment of peace, a bill paid on time - I realized He was working.

3. Anchor yourself in scripture.
Verses like Isaiah 43:2 reminded me I wasn’t drowning, even when it felt like I was:

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… when you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned.”

4. Look back to move forward.
Sometimes we don’t see God’s hand until we’re looking back. When I reflect on how far He’s brought me, it gives me strength to keep trusting Him for the next step.

5. Surround yourself with faith-filled voices.
Whether it’s through a friend, a support group, a sermon, or a devotional, having others speak truth when you can’t find it on your own is a lifeline.

If you're walking through something painful right now, and you're wondering where God is in all of it,  I want to tell you something I wish someone had told me:

He’s closer than you think.

He hasn't forgotten you. He hasn't given up on you. He sees the pain, the late nights, the silent cries, and the brave face you put on for everyone else. And He’s using it -all of it - to build something beautiful in you.

“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

Sweet friend, you are not alone in your struggle. And your story is far from over. 🤍
